IH&W is the 5th child of Miriam Pearson-Martinez, Licensed Midwife and husband Dr. R. Zachary Pearson-Martinez, pediatric cardiologist. As medical professionals and parents, they were disappointed in the lack of information being provided to expectant families and parents from traditional medical institutions. They established the institute with the ultimate goal of training health care providers and educators, as well as providing direct education to the public.
